Abstract  In the early years of the PRC, in order to change the unbalanced distribution of the national railways and to build a new industrial base and strategic rear in the western regions, China poured a great deal of resources into railway construction. New railways were built, such as the Chengdu-Chongqing, Tianshui-Lanzhou, Laibin-Munanguan, Baoji-Chengdu, Lanzhou-Urumchi, Baotou-Lanzhou, Fengtai-Shacheng and Yingtan-Xiamen lines, among others. In the construction of these new lines, important technological achievements were made, and many "Firsts" for China were created. These achievements owed much to the particular modes of the socialist mobilization of resources for such huge undertakings, and the advice and help of Soviet experts. On the other hand, however, due to defects in the construction systems and the lack of recognition of the importance of geological surveys, as well as the pure pursuit of rapid construction, the quality of parts of the railways was negatively affected. The construction of these new lines did, on the whole, have a positive impact on society.
