Abstract  Mineralogy received widespread attention in late Qing China since it was considered a practical science. Modern textbooks on mineralogy appeared in China in the late 19th century, published largely after the educational reforms of the late Qing period. This study focuses on textbooks on mineralogy which were published between 1902 and 1937. It analyses the original sources, content and impact of these books. Combining the perspectives of the history of education and social history, this study explores changes and developments in the system of knowledge revealed in mineralogical textbooks, and analyses the characteristics of these books at different stages. Since mineralogical textbooks played an important role in the spread of knowledge and in scientific communication, geologists not only rethought their approaches, but also criticized certain aspects of the existing teaching methods, as well as making suggestions for improvement. New achievements and examples from China also were incorporated into the textbooks, which led to changes in their arrangement and the presentation of knowledge in them. Self-compiled textbooks also became prevalent. Through studying mineralogy textbooks, this essay shows how systems of knowledge changed through the rearrangement of the textbooks, and how these books embodied the process by which mineralogy was localized in China.
