Notes on the Development of the Discipline of the History of Science and Technology

Abstract Chinese historians have achieved a great deal in their research on the history of science and technology since the 1950s. However, they face new challenges and difficulties at present. As a discipline, the history of science and technology is a complement to other branches of the historical sciences. Chinese scientists contributed significantly to the founding and development of the historiography of science and technology. Historians not only promote interdisciplinary studies, but also differentiate the history of S&T from other disciplines and enhance the study in the history of S&T. In general, a young scholar will study and work for more than ten years before he or she becomes a fully skilled historian. Many talented and hardworking young scholars are urgently needed to maintain the vitality of professional research on the history of S&T. It is also necessary for Chinese historians of S&T to devote themselves to high-quality study from international perspectives.
