Analysis of the Knowledge of the History of Western Science in Gezhi Shuyuan Keyi

Abstract  Gezhi shuyuan keyi (格致书院课艺,the Shanghai Polytechnic Prize Essay Competition) are important historical data about the spread of western learning to China in the late Qing Dynasty, not only reflecting the situation of the transmission of western science, but also providing rich records about knowledge of the history of western science. This paper focuses on content about the history of western science in Gezhi shuyuan keyi, discussing respondents’ understanding of the history of western science and sources for this, and analyzes the role of history of science on communication.
